 Autumn Term Topics

YEAR 5 VISIT TO CLAY LANE ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE.

It was autumn and winter during our visit. We learned how the water we drink is treated and purified using GAC, (Granule Activated Carbon-made from coconut shells!).  Year 5 were awarded the Eco-friendly, "Lunch Box Challenge" certificate for the third year in succession.

 Jewish Studies

Chumash

  • Avraham and Lot's changing relationship is in Lech Lecha; Chapter 13. Follow their journey on the map.

Useful resources are listed underneath each topic

SCIENCE

Keeping Healthy:

  • Identify the components of a healthy and varied diet and describe how an idea about the effect of diet on health was tested; recognise some harmful effects of drugs; recognise that during exercise the heart beats faster to take blood more rapidly to the muscles; make careful measurements of pulse rate, represent these in suitable graphs and explain what the graphs show.

Changing State:

  • Name and describe examples of the main processes associated with water changing state and recognise that these processes can be reversed; explain the water cycle in terms of these processes; use patterns in data to make predictions .

ICT

  • The children use excel to to carry out calculations on a spreadsheet. They also explore the effects of changing the data in a spreadsheet.
  • Graphical Modelling uses an object-based graphics package to create, combine and manipulate objects and explore possibilities. We use an object-based graphics package to create a range of geometric shapes similar to those in 'The Snail' by Matisse.

ART

  • Here we explore ideas for a still-life painting of objects that have meaning for them; collect visual and other information for  work; organise and combine visual and tactile qualities; experiment with and use their knowledge of painting techniques to communicate ideas and experiences; compare and comment on ideas, methods and approaches in their own and others' work; adapt and improve their own work, according to its purpose. All this is  approached using Jewish artefacts for inspiration.
  • The children explore Greek pots on the internet, their shape, form, space and decoration; work from source material to help them with their work; experiment with and combine materials and processes to design and make a three-dimensional form; compare and discuss ideas, methods and ways of working in others' work, relating these to their own ideas; adapt and improve their work as it progresses

D&T

  • The children refer to their experiences of using food to help generate ideas; they explain why they have chosen certain foods and processes; have followed an order of work and have chosen equipment appropriately; have made and evaluated a new biscuit for Chanukah; have used tools and equipment safely and tried to be accurate in their making

PE

  • In Basketball they show awareness of opponents and team-mates when playing games; perform basic skills; apply these skills in a variety of simple games; make choices about appropriate targets, space and equipment; use a variety of simple tactics; describe how their bodies work and feel when playing games; work well with a partner and in a small group to improve their skills
  • In football we employ external coaches to teach most children different techniques for passing, controlling, dribbling and shooting the ball in games; apply basic principles of team play to keep possession of the ball; use marking, tackling and/or interception to improve their defence; play effectively as part of a team; know what position they are playing in and how to contribute when attacking and defending; plan practices and warm ups to get ready for playing safely; recognise their own and others' strengths and weaknesses in games; suggest ideas that will improve performance

    SCIENCE

    Gases Around Us

    • The children recognise that air is a material and that it is one of a range of gases which have important uses, that liquids evaporate to form gases and that gases change shape and flow from place to place; measure volumes of liquids accurately, recognise when observations and measurements need to be repeated and provide explanations for what they observe in terms of knowledge and understanding about gases.

    Earth, Sun and Moon

    • The children recognise that the Earth, Sun and Moon are spherical and support this with some evidence; explain in terms of the rotation of the Earth why shadows change and the Sun appears to move across the sky during the course of the day; recognise that it is daylight in the part of the Earth facing the Sun, that the Moon orbits the Earth and identify patterns in secondary data about sunrise and sunset.

    • The Science Museum
    • Natural History Museum (Cromwell Road, London)
    • Mill Hill Observatory ( 553 Watford Way - Mill Hill - London - NW7 2QS)

    Websites

    ICT

    • The children: interpret, check and question data; recognise that poor quality information leads to unreliable results.
    • The children: design and create a simple advertising display which produces a combination of events; write simple procedures and be able to link output devices together; amend their procedures to get a desired outcome

    ART

    • In Talking Textiles the children explore how stories have been represented in textiles in different times and cultures. They work together to make a two- or three-dimensional work based on a familiar story, myth or legend. They investigate and use a range of materials, techniques and textile processes to create surface patterns and textures and other visual and sound effects.
    • Children explore the images within the Bayeux Tapestry as an early example of a Talking Textile.

    D&T

The children design and make a toy with a moving part, using a cam for a particular purpose

    PE

    • In this series of dance lessons the children learn to : perform body actions with control and coordination; choose movements with different dynamic qualities to make a dance phrase that expresses an idea, mood or feeling; link actions; remember and repeat dance phrases; perform short dances, showing an understanding of expressive qualities; describe the mood, feelings and expressive qualities of dance; describe how dancing affects their body; know why it is important to be active; suggest ways they could improve their work
    • During the second half of the term the children learn to play badminton.

    SCIENCE

    Changing Sounds

    • The children generalise that sounds are produced when objects vibrate; suggest how to change the pitch and loudness of the sounds produced by a range of musical instruments; recognise that sounds travel through solids, water and air, suggest how to investigate how well sound travels through different materials and say how good their evidence is.

    Life Cycles

    • The children learn to name and explain the functions of some parts of a flower; describe the processes of pollination, fertilisation, seed dispersal and germination; explain how to carry out a fair test to find the conditions necessary for germination; explain that living things need to reproduce if the species is to survive and recognise stages in the growth and development of humans.

    ICT

    • The children learn how to use Power Point to make a presentation of their choice to then present to their class.

    D&T

    • The children learn about the construction of a range of musical instruments, including those from different times and cultures, and how different sounds can be created and altered to make different notes. They learn to use this knowledge and understanding to design and make a working musical instrument using a combination of materials.(This work has direct links with the Science Changing Sounds unit. See above).

    GEOGRAPHY

    • Most children will begin to account for their own views about the environment, recognising that other people may have reasons for thinking differently; identifying how people affect the environment and recognise ways people try to manage it for the better
    • Mr H. Bluston, a governor at Moriah and a Harrow Councillor for eight years until May 2006, brilliantly teaches year 5 debating skills leading to a debate: should the High Street be closed to traffic?

    PE

    • In this popular unit the children are transported to a local pool to focus on swimming more fluently, improving their swimming strokes, and learning personal survival techniques.
    • In all swimming activities, children have to keep afloat and propel themselves through water. Learning to swim enables them to take part in a range of water-based activities.
    • At school the children learn to play rounders.
    • In preparing for Sports Day at Moriah the children concentrate on developing good basic running, jumping and throwing techniques. They are set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing.
    • As in all athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy.
    • They explore running, jumping and throwing activities, and take part in simple challenges and competitions. They experiment with different ways of travelling, throwing and jumping, increasing their awareness of speed and distance.
    • As in all athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy.
